Any recommendations / advice for team membership
« on: December 20, 2009, 18:27 »
Hi hi,

Which team can an injured (can't paddle anymore) but experienced & enthusiastic dragon boater join to keep his passion for the sport alive? Perhaps can just be the coxswain / mentor to newbies? Dragon boating is in my blood after years in the sport. I can't give it up just like that!   :(

There should be teams willing to take you in. Drop me a pm, if you like to join kiyah-splashh! as a coxswain.  :)

Hi DBter,

I am having the same situation as you; am injured for lower back pain (plus other symptons of knee pain). Therefore have to rest a couple of months; then i will go back to paddle. Actually, my understanding is most athletes at some point of time gets injured and have to rest for a long period to recover, than come back to train and paddle. Hmmn... how about you also take some time to rest and recover first?

Thanks for the advice. But if i continue to paddle, it will only agravate the existing damage. Haiz... why do dbters always have back problems???!!!  :(

Hi Dbter,

I believe you are not alone. Same as me, if i start paddling 'immediately', my back pain will aggravate. That's why i need to rest and recover first; i believe you should do that too. I've seen physiotherapist, and they commented that hardcore atheletes will see them often for sports injuries. Therefore, it can be quite unavoidable for us to see sports doctors once in a while. My current situation has caused me to avoid all paddling and gym workouts.

Just to share with you; i'd studied human anatomy and sports injuries; the reason why dragon boat atheletes gets injured are due to improper form during training and over-use of repetitive movement that causes impact to the spine.

It may be a bit hard to avoid improper form, as during all competitive trainings and competitions, every athletes 'chiong' and give all their best to row faster, and such dedication cause individuals to sacrifice form.

You might want to see a sports doctor; physiotherapist or chiropractor... i'm not sure how serious is your back injury; hopefully its not a problem relating to the spinal disc...

Hello everyone.

I used to paddle up to 2 years ago but stopped due to an injured shoulder. But now the itch to paddle is back, and I believe my shoulder has recovered somewhat. Besides catching some DB races here and there, I have not caught up with the local scene; therefore would like recommendations for a weekend team to join:

-Prefer Sunday to Saturday
-Would like a team where the environment is relaxed, and the focus is more social
-Not competitive, at most twice a week training near competition season

Thanks.
