Really wana to improve skills in dragonboating
« on: June 28, 2009, 19:48 »
Hello,

gt a few questions that is in my mind, sort of unsolvable.

during the race, i feel very lousy, never improved my techniques. For example. my coach pointed out that, i did not twist my body or stretch out long enuff to pull the water during the race today.

i admit that during racing or fast time, i m nt able to twist that much or stretch to pull the water. But for normal training or normal pace, i m able to do.

I feel very lousy about it. Is there any channels or places for me to gain more knowledge or wat, to improve.

If you were able to find this forum, I'm sure you can google to find some good answers out there. In fact, why don't you ask your coach?

I feel that talking to your coach will be the best. See what he says and work out a training program to see how you can improve.

Hi Seng,

Dont despair.

Different people have different learning curves. Some take 1 month, some take 10 years. Take your time to experience and learn :) Dont worry so much.

Was that your first race? How long have u been training? Are the training methods correct? Do you practice enough? Are the teaching points clear and obvious? ...

I have been paddling for close to 10 years, and i'm still making mistakes, i'm still learning.

Dont be disheartened. Ultimately, you must enjoy what you doing.

your coach, your teammates, these are the people you should talk to.
don't be afraid of being made fun of or getting criticism.
instead, you should take these criticisms, and prove the people who say it, wrong.
besides these people, you should also aim to prove yourself wrong that you're a loser.
self-confidence is key my friend.
continue paddling with your heart, with passion.
you'll see yourself improving soon.

i wish you all the best, and hope that your coach and team will continue helping you to improve.
 ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

race pace is usually faster due to adrenaline rush, esp for the normal teams with lesser race experience and more prone to being excited.  Also, if you train with heavier boat like the SDBA ones, you can pull during training because pace is slower as the team may not be able to increase stroke rate due to the boat resistance.  On a race boat, the tendency for teams that trained on a heavy boat is to raise the stroke rate because water feels alot "lighter".  The only remedy is to train on a racing boat. Otherwise there is no way a team can learn to twist faster and at the same time have sufficient stroke length.  Another way is to do air stroking in front of the mirror, but that means there is not going to be resistance.  At least you train your body to learn how to move faster and see for yourself how you move and how fast you move before your form goes out in front of the mirror.  Lastly and most important, hit the gym and do weight training.
It is all just in the mind.

This goes for all people who want to have a look at improving their technique....

Google "Danny Ching". He's the current Team USA DB coach and the world number 1 in the Outrigger Canoe (OC is a great cross trainer as it's the same stroke as DB). He brought USA from nothing in the world champs in 2005 to 4 golds in 2007. He paddles OC1 - A LOT - so knows how to make the boat move.

In particular look at his body position, vertical. He isn't lunging forward like a lot of people do. He's getting the reach through rotation of the core and the power from the large muscle groups - abs, lats and legs. If you're having trouble with the fast rating, it's probably due to the fact that you're using too much bicep/tricep and shoulders. These are relatively small muscle groups and will tire very quickly, which means you'll slow your rating, or shorten your stroke to compensate. Abs, abs, abs and more abs.

Look at how his top hand never goes lower than the sternum and he's getting a full catch before he engages the power. Crunching down with his abs at the same time kicking with his legs.

It's also a great learning tool for teams who can't train 5-6 times, if you can't train hard, train smart.

Here's a plug for my team....want to try outrigger? Singapore Paddle Club offer introductory lessons, drop me a line for more info!
