SDBF 09 racing course
« on: June 20, 2009, 18:09 »
well, first off, its my first thread in this forum, after being a silent reader for more than a year.

By now, im sure most of us are aware that the SDBF races will start near the Shears Bridge and end of barely few meters away from the Marina Barrage. Any takes on the positioning/location of the course?

I for one wanna highlight several problems i forsee because of this course. First is the strong headwind and currents which may cause boats to go offcourse/capsize (kinda reminds me of the east-coast conditions). Secondly, there are barriers not very far away from the end point. I can imagine boats coming in after last charge, with their rowers tired and all and having to hold water/back paddle quick enough before the boats hit the pontoon (especially lane 6).

What do u guys think?

I only can say that during the SDBF, we will a few more incidents of capsizing than most other events. The location of the end points serve to please the VIPs rather than the rowers, such that they can have a very good view of the end points. Unfortunately, rowers who are so tired out from rowing would generally have little distance to stop their boats in time. I feel SDBA hasn't learnt their lesson. A few boats are bound to hit the pontoons.

hi guys, the strong head wind might be a controvesial factor in determining a Fair FASTEST timing when such need arises.

As for safety wise, i don't think it affects much. KTH is rather sturdy in such conditions (tried and tested  :) :) at the race course last weekend and today), structure and weight of this boat is quite stable.

Only thing is to hope that for next weekend, the DUCKTOURS can just stop moving about at that area. Cos the wave created by boat passing by can really affect the boats on the outer-lanes of the race course. ;) ;)

i seriously doubt it man, remember regatta, with all the bumboats and stuff? anyway, today's races seemed to go by quite okay. so hopefully there wont be any problems.

yes today's races seemed quite okay but hopefully they really keep all the speedboats, ducktours, whatever it is out of the area if its gonna affect the teams adversely. and one more point regarding today, it was quite dangerous that they had the raft race infront of ending point. imagine a dragonboat hitting right into their 'raft'? there goes their raft race! GOOD GAME

Agree with you my friend. It's quite shallow in there comparing to lanes 4, 5 and 6.  ;D ;D
