What about them, makes them so good?

Don't get me wrong, it's not a negative question but a positive one in fact.

What'd y'all think man.

putting a team up for discussion on an open board.

imho just doesnt seem right. dont get me wrong, much as this is a forum and you have good intentions to analyzing njc's prowess. however, i feel that putting up a thread like that would just reignite the previous debacle which happened a couple of months back which resulted in unpleasantry. further more it invites unnecessary scrutiny and scorn from the community, which i sincerely dont believe that any team deserves.

its not personal mate.

pardon me Blade, but what is the debacle which happened a few months back?

honestly, i am pretty intrigued by NJC's rowing technique as well. looking at videos taken by spectators on their races, their stokes didn't seem that powerful compared to their competitors, yet their boat glides really well.

i understand also that they are trained canoeists, so maybe they have better water-sense than dragonboaters because training individually on a craft allows them to gauge when is the best time to exert strength that will maximise their water catch. but is this the sole reason?

also, i make a comparison to SCF in june race last year, where they also seemingly effortlessly glided across 800m to the finishing point, beating many dragonboat teams.

maybe canoeists make better dragonboaters. what do you all think?

can we take all these comments in good light in preparation for a good SDBF to come in June?

Oh, i overlooked that. Sorry man but thanks for reminding anyways. I dont think anyone would scrutinise or flame NJC though so...yeah. :D just looking for opinions.

And are you referring to the debacle in the SRR review thread that got locked?

agree that they have better water sense...

i think its the volume of water training that they clock... gives them superior water fitness and much better-honed water sense.

another important factor i feel is their strength-to-weight ratio.... super high...

anyway, my $0.02...

a potentially very flamable question:

are there any teams out there that can beat them? and why do u think they can/cannot do so?

maybe SCF is the organisation to take dragonboat forward. SCF and NJC have proven that canoeing and dragonboat are disciplines that share almost entirely similar skill sets.

this was what happened in NJC Dragon Boat and Canoeing Club 20 years ago: their canoe and dragon boat team belonged to the same club.  They did not train night and day but i remember they trained at least one or 2 weekdays and 1 weekend.

Weekdays consisted of water training followed by land training.  Some times they went to row in East Coast open sea.  There were a few occasions that the sea was so rough the poor bailer could not bail out the seawater in time and the boat almost capsized :)  Sometimes the boat was so close to big tankers that the dragon boat was almost sucked along by the tankers.

For land training in those days they did not have fantastic equipment just some dusty bells and a few medicine balls.  Sometimes they went to the gym at national stadium (no aircon and had to share equipment with the public).  Land training was mainly circuit and endurance, not so much on building bodybuilder-like muscles.  By the time the land training ended it was almost 8plus pm.

I forgot about the tactics they used (8-20 or 10-20 blah blah) but i think there was no so-called official coach.  The techniques were passed down from seniors.

One point to note.  The culture in the club 20 years ago was almost like regimental: senior yelling at juniors and a lot of discipline was instilled during training.  It was like preparing the guys for their NS.  The members were also very close to each other and they usually hanged around each other before lessons and etc...

I wonder how is the training now after 20 years...
