hmm i'm not very sure but i have tried rowing on both KTH and sometimes on a champion.

personally i would say the champion would really make a huge difference on long distance races, whereas in short dist i dunno how the weight difference for both boats would matter.

would someone like to comment?

KTH Seagull on the left corner weighing in at 380kg (the max limit for an IDBF racing boat), and on the right Dalian Champion weighing in at 250kg (the min limit for an IDBF racing boat).

Guess it will take slightly more effort (exactly 6.5kg more effort per person per stroke to keep the boat from sinking from the sweet optimum gliding speed in a KTH boat). I don't know. If we translate that to dumbbell row, adding 6.5kg per pax seems quite heavy. However I bet there are some dynamics and physics we left out of this little simplified thought experiment.

Just maybe, this is why the observation that NYP can still lose a pacing set despite significantly higher stroke rate. (Of course, we are assuming that both teams applied similar strength and power at the catch.)

I only managed to catch one pacing set. So I have no idea how the other sets were like. Just shedding some light on the 2 different boats.
It is all just in the mind.

btw, the expat teams were on the water as well last weekend. I thought they did fine considering they were mixed teams.

oh didn't know that SMU improved from last June. But this weekend will be a test for all teams. I didn't really get to see that fierce drummer though. haha.. But their boat speed is quite impressive.

However, having analyzed on both KTH and Champion Boats, the weight difference is really significantly huge. That explains the fast speed that blue champion boat is riding on. So it is like back to square one for them? oppss.. no offence here.

And i think other IVP teams missed out here are RP and SIM. Any comments on SIM and RP (last heard both got into the grand finals of masters series held 2 weeks ago)???

oh, but does it feel different on KTH and Champion boat? Cos i have only been on the long SDBA boat, that one is f***ing heavy. I am sure champion boat is lighter.

So which sch uses champion boat and which use KTH? is that y SMU seem to be leading the pack all the time last weekend?

comeon, it's pretty expected for SMU to beat not only NP, but every other teams, when they are using champion boat. if any teams managed to be on par or even beat them, then either that team is damn good, or SMU did a really bad set.

and from what I heard, SAFSA is the only team that beat SMU pretty consistently.
hmmm Mental, how accurate are your sources ? I was there at the wall but I didnt see it happen all the time.. Were you there in the NP boat ?

i'm sure if you ask around the guys from SMU or SAFSA, you will know SMU and SAFSA has been pacing for the past few weeks already, not just last weekend at the wall. have you seen all of them?

to be able to just be on par alone using KTH boat against Champion boat for one set is already a very hard feat. and i've heard they did it quite a few times.

if i'm not wrong, two equally strong teams using KTH and Champion boat, the Champion boat will pull away on average at least one boat length.

hey mental,

I guess too that is the reason why SMU is leading the pack all the time. The difference of a Champion Boat and a KTH in weight can totally be brought up. So i would say it wasn't fair and clear to say SMU is better or whatnot.

However, i feel champion boat got its drawbacks too.. else SDBA would have used them as the racing boat for all of their evets. To what i understand KTH's BOW like is a sharper edge pointing forward while Champion Boat  is more Squarish at the BOW of the boat. So if both boats were to cut water, in a long race, KTH would even be better due to the opening / cutting of water. That is how i feel personally only.

For 300m, we really have to see what strategy is being placed. if we are talking about a 200m race, rowing hard bindly with a good starts may help. But for a 300m race, the last 100m will actually determine the better boats (assuming all boats start out with equally good starts).  :)
