Dragonboat racing may be included in 2010 Asian Games
« on: December 24, 2006, 00:38 »
With the Doha Asian Games just over, the next Asian Games in 2010 will be another benchmark for Singapore water sports. Will SG be good enough to field a team in contention for medal by then, if dragonboat racing really makes it into the list? What do you think? The article is from Channel News Asia.

BEIJING : Dragonboat racing may be included as a sport at the 2010 Asian Games in China's Guangzhou city, an Asian Olympic Council (AOC) official was cited as saying Wednesday.

AOC sports committee member Preeda Rodphothong said he was in China "mainly to study the possibility of dragonboat racing becoming a medal sport in Asian Games," the Chinese Sports Daily said.

Rodphothong is attending the fourth Yangtze River Three Gorges International Dragonboat Racing tournament in Yichang, central China.

The paper said that the Asian Dragon Boat Federation has applied for the sport to be included in the Asian Games after becoming a member of the AOC.

Dragonboat racing is already a medal sport at the Southeast Asian Games and will make its debut at the East Asian Games in Macau later this year, the report said.
It is all just in the mind.

Let's see - China, and the Philipines will be fighting for Gold and Silver. That means only the Bronze is up for grabs. Let me check our standings in the previous SEA games...

I was thinking more like, Gold to China, Silver and Bronze to China-Macau, China-Hongkong or China-Taipei. Then we have Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam in contention. Our national team needs to pick up the standard pretty fast within the next 4 yrs to be in contention for the Bronze. I think the coming SEA games performance will be a pretty good gauge. Come on SINGAPORE!
Where can I paddle? I just got out of Vault 13!

Haha...thanks Vault Boy for reminding us that there will not be just 1 China team, but 4 separate China teams in Asian Games.

Anyone here a fan of Class 95? RadioDJ Rod Monteiro kept announcing Asian Games as the "China Games"...

imagine Philippines beating China, i think the athletes will all be lined up against the wall and shot!!!!

ok lets side bet! I bet Philippines cannot beat China.

On that note, Singapore has to be able to beat Philippines before going anywhere near medals.

Ya! China Games indeed! I was watching the sprint kayak races on CCTV, and at the last 2nd day after the Kayak-Canoe Finals, the host was saying that China has claimed their 1000th Gold Medal since the beginning of Asian Games.

Actually China has 5 teams, "China-Singapore"!   Considering the number of 'adopted' talents we have.
It is all just in the mind.

Call me a pessimist, but Singapore is nowhere near the Philipines or Indonesia. Let's not even talk about consistency. Secondly, there is much higher chance of sending an individual to the Asian Games in a flatwater event (read canoe/kayak/scull) rather than a dragonboat team to the Asian Games. It's all about funding, sponsorship and logistics. Case in point: Singapore waterpolo team. Lastly, SDBA has got to study how Singapore Sailing has turned the boat around, pardon the pun,   , for the past few years. Having a foreign coach is only a minute step forward...

Talk is easy. Sending one 20-crew mens / womens team is even more siong then sending one soccer team up. And when the SNOC weigh the winning odds of our national team against the costs incurred. Not very justifiable. Other sports with higher chances of winning are obviously given a higher priority.
