Don't know about you people out there, but I've tried canoeing in Kallang, and Macritchie, and feel its unfair that feedbacks on Kallang rowing has been unpleasant, at best.
Kallang, the unfavoured child by far among compared to Macritchie, deserves some credit. True, when it has been decided that canoeing will be moved back to macritchie, I was one of them who heaved a huge sigh of relief and even went out to party to celebrate (ok ok its just an excuse to party). However, so many months down the road later, and after the initial euphoria of coming back to beautiful scenery and peaceful waters, I actually do miss Kallang.
Do not mistake me. Macritchie is a beautiful place to canoe. Scenery is beautiful, water is peaceful, the sunset is breathtaking, and for those less princessly, you can even scoop a mouth of delicious tasting water whenever you stop for a rest. But....its TOO peaceful.
To me, canoeing is a fierce sport. Those who row competitively will understand the burning pain in your muscles, the breathing as if your lungs were on fire, and the determination and strength of mind so strong it sometimes numbs your mind and senses. Macritchie is beautiful, but its too peaceful in the long run. To put it in simple singlish, it takes the garang-ness out of canoeing.
What macritchie canoeists are missing:
1) the huge currents by courtesy of the sea,
2) the huge waves by courtesy of sea and police coast guard,
3) the occasional dead cat floating by,
4) the dirtiness of the sea,
5) the stinging pain of salt water in your eyes
6) the occasional cut people sustain when walking too close to the sharp coastal rocks,
7) the crazy direction you need to correct almost ALL the time,

the occasional cordoning off of certain areas while police...erm... look for ... clues to their cases.
9) the unbearable smell of sweat and seawater (yes it stinks)
10) the occasional treat of hunks and babes doing wakeboarding NEXT to us, not knowing the distress they are causing to us.
All these and much more... when i was in kallang I felt like a beach boy, and there's something about the affiliation to the sea that makes everything more garang, and the hunks and babes of canoeing that much yummier.
Now? We are all reservoir kids
