Missing (drowned) man in Lower Seletar
« on: May 27, 2007, 23:01 »
Sad incident. This place only opened up not long ago. Perhaps the place is really not too safe for paddling? What could be the problem and what could have been prevented? Rather than just signing the indeminity form with PA.

I feel so sorry for the lady.  :(

I think calm inland water bodies like our reservoirs are the safest water for paddling activities. There are few dangers, if at all.

But risky behaviour and not understanding water safety are dangerous, whether at a reservoirs or a shallow longkang.

i guess rowing in any large water body is dangerous

but if you take the necessary precautions and use yr common sense

it should be fun and safe

you are responsible for your own safety

I think dragon boating should be relatively safer. So far I have not seen dragon boats capsized during trainings. It's not easy to capsize it.

i think due to the fact that there is a country club around, the fertilizers are washed off the golf courses and into the water. we cant really do anything unless the country club stops using fertilizers, which is highly impossible. when im on the train passing the reservoir, i constantly see flotation machinery hauling massive amounts of seaweeds. i think it boils down to practicing personal safety, like wearing life vest and such, as this is the only way we can protect ourselves, and not change the stakeholders around who made it possible for us to use the lower seletar...
Today is a good day..... to paddle... :)

I also think handphone (put to silent) and a sound device (like whistle attached to PFD) is important if you are paddling out. That few seconds could be precious.

Shoes and heavy cotton clothings that hang water should also be discouraged for paddling activities in the reservoirs.

But I agreed waering a proper PFD is important, and it should be comfortable so that there is no urge to take it off when the weather gets too hot.

Just to add on, go for group paddling. Help to look out for each other.
