A new Sea Sports Centre?

A sea sports centre may be developed in Sembawang
By Joanne Leow

SINGAPORE: Water sports lovers may soon have another place to enjoy the sea. Sembawang GRC MP Lim Wee Kiat says he is looking at the development of a sea sports centre at Sembawang beach.

He was speaking at a massive clean-up of the beach. More than 150 youths, including those from the neighbouring community club youth groups, pitched in to help clean up the kilometre-long beach.

Organisers say they are seeking to encourage youths to care for their environment from a young age.

About 120 tonnes of litter and flotsam are collected at the beach annually, with visitors to the park being the main contributors of the refuse.

Mr Lee hopes that the clean-up will be just one part of reviving the northern beach.

"One of the key focus next year will be looking at the development of the Sembawang Sea Sports Centre. We used to have a very famous Sembawang Canoeing Club here but it was closed a few years ago. Currently, I am trying to look for a suitable piece of real estate here to redevelop Sembawang Sea Sports Centre, as well as bring back sea sports life to the straits," he says.
